Word on the street is that Apple isn’t rushing to adopt 5G technology in its iPhone lineup this year , but it appears that the company at least considered it. According to a report from Reuters , based on testimony provided by Apple supply chain executive Tony Blevins during the ongoing trial between the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Qualcomm, Apple went to Qualcomm initially due to the rebates in place for patent licensing costs. “Blevins testified that Apple has long sought multiple suppliers for modem chips but signed an agreement with Qualcomm to exclusively supply the chips because the chip supplier offered deep rebates on patent license costs in exchange for exclusivity.” But it wasn’t just Qualcomm that Apple was courting. According to Blevins’s testimony, Apple has also been in talks with MediaTek and Samsung to supply 5G modems for future iPhones. Apple’s newest iPhones, which are expected to launch later this year, are already rumored to feature quite a few noteworthy changes. And now one analyst has weighed in on the subject, saying that he believes Apple will include the Wi-Fi 6 standard for its upcoming lineup. This is from analyst Blaine Curtis of Barclays, and the comment came during a CES wrap-up. Unfortunately, that’s all we have to go on here, as there isn’t much in the way of additional information. Wi-Fi 6 is also known as 802.11ax. It’s meant to replace the current 802.11ac standard, and should be finalized sometime this year. Apple wasn’t the first company to launch a smartphone with a notch, but the company definitely brought all of the attention to the design philosophy. As a result, we saw a lot of different phones with their own take on the notch. And while that design choice dominated last year, and there are still some new smartphones set to arrive in 2019 that will keep the notch for a bit longer, we have already started to see how 2019 will differ from last year. A new WSJ report claims that Apple will again be unveiling three new iPhones this year. The company plans to add a triple-camera setup to the high-end iPhone XS Max successor, with the iPhone XS and iPhone XR successors featuring a dual-camera setup. Right now, the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max feature a dual-camera setup while the iPhone XR features a single-camera setup. It is likely that the 2019 iPhone XR will gain a secondary telephoto lens like the iPhone XS. It remains to be seen what the third lens on the high-end ‘iPhone XI’ will be for. Despite the fact that we’re in 2019 already, the rumor mill has been pretty quiet on the iPhone XS successor up to this point. But it was inevitable that the rumor mill would come up with something fairly early into the year. And here we are just six days in and we’ve got the first render of what’s being called the “iPhone XI”. @OnLeaks, along with Digit.in teamed up to put together a new render of what the new iPhone will apparently look like, and . . . it’s interesting. That feels like the nicest thing to say about it. Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, says some changes are coming to help boost iPhone upgrades/sales, spurred on by an expected weak first fiscal quarter of 2019. The question is, of course, will any of those changes actually result in more iPhone upgrades and sales? Only time will give us the answer to that. With the iPhone X in 2017, Apple launched a smartphone that was ahead of its time. In 2018, Apple only made some basic improvements to that same formula and launched the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. While some of these improvements are notable, they are overall very iterative in nature. Apple follows a tick-tock policy where a major iPhone release is followed by an ‘s’ refresh that focuses on speed and camera. The iPhone XS was no different. But 2019 needs to be different.
